Judiciary of Sierra Leone Communications, Kenema District Eastern Region, 10th March , 2026: The Hon Chief Justice of the Republic of Sierra Leone Hon. Justice Komba has for the first time in the history of Sierra Leone taken the Court of Appeal to sit in Kenema City and deal with Appeal cases emanating from the South and Eastern regions.
However, similar move was made last year when the Court of Appeal sat in Makeni to deal with matters emanating from the Northern province under the access to Justice reform initiated by His Lordship Hon. Justice Komba Kamanda.
This tangible reform brings an end to the age old challenges of transportation costs, costs of accommodation, and the economic and social difficulties associated with the prosecution of Appeals in Freetown.
In his keynote address, the Hon Chief Justice stated that access to Justice is cornerstone of Justice delivery ensuring that justice is more accessible to every doorstep or community in Sierra Leone.
The Hon Chief Justice revealed that four senior Justices will be resident in Kenema for the next two weeks to deal with over thirty Appeal cases. The said Justices are Hon. Justice Fatmatta Bintu Alhadi JSC, Hon Justice Michael Mamie JA ,Hon Justice Aiah Simeon Allieu JA and the Hon Justice A Fisher J.
At the opening ceremony, the Mayor of Kenema City His Worship Thomas Baio lavished praises on the Chief Justice for such a laudable and groundbreaking initiative to take the Court of Appeal to Kenema City for the first time since the establishment of the Judiciary almost one hundred years ago. The Paramount Chief referred to the Chief Justice as a great reformer who knows exactly what the people want.
Several other stakeholders thanked the Chief Justice for his visionary approach and leadership in the Judiciary of Sierra Leone. According to a litigant who has waited for quite a while for his Appeal to be heard said ‘ this milestone achievement has brought relief and hope to the Justice system and those of us who cannot afford to prosecute our matters in Freetown.
At the close of the opening session, the Court of Appeal immediately went into action by hearing Appeals cases.
